Floating Away: sensory deprivation a peaceful and mind focusing experience

I was recently asked what I wanted to do for my birthday so I consulted my bucket list. One of the items on the list was to experience a sensory deprivation tank. So when earlier this year I was at a fitness festival and the opportunity arose to learn more about it and then later to be able to try it out, I was excited but also a little bit apprehensive and nervous about how it would feel.

I was given three sessions at the Float Spa, which is located in the center of Hove. It's in a great location nearby to many shops, cafes and restaurants. Also good for scouting out new places for a spot of lunch or a coffee after. The Float Spa offers a slice of peace and tranquility and is a great way to enjoy a break away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Float Spa, Hove

Upon my arrival each time I was greeted by staff members who were warm and welcoming, they diminished any worries or concerns I was having about this new experience, by answering my questions and putting me instantly at ease. I felt completely safe and welcomed and it was as if the city had started to melt into the background as soon as I stepped foot in the door.

I was guided away from reception and into the next room, I took my shoes off and stowed them which made me feel at home right away. I was shown towards my pod, which was housed inside a private room with a private shower. The relaxation continued as everything I needed for the next hour was provided, towels, shower gels, shampoo, ear plugs. It was all there, so I had no need to worry about anything.

What is it like to experience being inside float therapy/ sensory deprivation pod ?

The tank itself was a big white pod that looked like it had landed in the room from outer space, just like a scene from a science-fiction movie. The lid was fully lifted and the water inside was glowing a gentle blue colour.  The pod was much larger than I had anticipated, which was a relief to find out, As one of my initial concerns was about potentially feeling claustrophobic when inside the pod. I took a shower, popped my ear plugs in and carefully climbed in, the water was cosy and warm at just above my skin temperature. The ear plugs kept water out of my ears as well as keep out any unwanted sound making sure it’s nice and peaceful inside.

I found it surprisingly easy to float, the high concentration of epsom salts in the pod allowed my body to become extremely buoyant.  My legs wanted to pop up to the top of the water, it was a very strange sensation, being so buoyant, but as I settled in and found a comfortable position for my legs and arms, I felt very safe and cocooned. The pod felt very womb-like, and I felt almost instantly relaxed. I could feel all my muscles beginning to relax, as I didn't have to put in any effort to float serenely on top of the water.

Isn't it dark inside there?

Over the course of my three sessions I experimented with the different lighting settings, which were operated from inside the pod by button. The starting blue light could be changed to one that gently changes colour. The light could also be turned off plunging the pod into complete darkness. I liked the fact that I had control of the lighting from inside the pod, so that if any uncomfortable feelings arose, or if I just wanted the lights back on, I could easily find the button even in the pitch black. There was also no pressure to stay in the pod for the whole session, I was able to get out at any point and take a breather.  For further safety there was a call button inside the pod, so I could call for help at any time from members of staff.

Meditation, breathing practices and new ways of relaxing

I have been practicing meditation for some time and I used these techniques inside the pod, however I think that the float spa could help many people to begin to explore a unique meditation practice especially, if they have never tried meditation before.  I found it easy to switch off and enjoy the pure relaxation of the pod. With the outside stimulus removed, I found it effortless to focus on my breathing and being present in my body. That being said, on several occasions, I was disturbed by the sound of my stomach gurgling! Which was seemingly amplified by the surrounding water. Other than that there were no other distractions, only that of your own mind and thoughts.

Keep calm and carry on, taking the benefits with you

After my hour floating, I had plenty of time to take a nice relaxing shower and wash off the remnants of the Epsom salts. Items I needed for after the float were also provided, drinking water, q-tips, moisturizers, hair dryers could all be found in the Vanity Room. After the Vanity Room I made my way downstairs to the Dream Room, which was a little unusual because it was located in an old vault as the building used to be a bank, but that definitely didn't detract from the tranquillity.  Inside I found a relaxing room filled with comfortable bean bags, soothing music and a selection of reading materials. I helped myself to a cup of tea, after lifting the lids on each of the containers and smelling all of the gorgeous aromas before making my choice. Here I continued to unwind and decompress as I prepared myself to leave and re-enter the world once more.

The ultimate me time

Overall the experience was an unusual one to say the least, I really wasn't sure what to expect but I really enjoyed feeling deeply relaxed while floating.  I also felt that the effects lasted long after my float, meaning that I was able to sleep better and generally carry a sense of calm with me for the next couple of days. I would highly recommend the float spa to anybody who is experiencing any muscular pain or if you just want to experience a quiet, deep relaxing space, it really was the ultimate me time.
